Caption: Some of the inmates at the Beggar's Home form a circle in the courtyard to play catch the ball during their "recreational break" in the morning. In a typical jail inmates interact with each other and cell mates. The beggar's home is conspicuous in this regard. The photographer has never seen inmates either talk to each other or interact that way people do living together in large numbers and in close proximity. They just sit in large groups in the sun and stare at nothingness, further proof that custodialization for the crime of poverty is affecting them in many ways.
