Pupils at St Patrick school - Yangon (Burma)
Pupils at St Patrick school - Yangon (Burma) |
Description: |
Nothing can quench the thirst for knowledge of Burmese young students. Just see the classrooms packed to the ceiling of the private tutoring institutes that have flourished in the capital. However, knowledge is a rare and precious commodity in Burma. Universities, historically the epicenters of political dissidence, have a certain tendency to close at the first sign of social unrest: their doors have remained shut from 1988 to 1990, then from 1996 to 1999. When opened, the education they offer primarily relies on memorization and repetition, without true interaction between the teacher and his students, explains Soe Khaing, who studied both in Yangon and Bangkok.
?At university, students are only supposed to listen, take notes and recite. In Thailand, everyone? so eager to participate !? Maung Maung Than, a French teacher, pursues: ?Here, teachers do not tolerate any mistake. So students tend to be shy. They don?t express themselves for fear of saying something wrong.? |
